Let’s get really nerdy right now. Typeset In The Future is a website dedicated to the study of typography in iconic scifi films, so what better film to explore than Ridley Scott’s Alien? It’s undoubtedly one of the genre’s most important visual breakthroughs, and the typographic work is amongst it’s unsung heroes. As a designer myself, I’ll admit to pre-judging a film depending on its opening title card. I believe in most cases that a film is a calling card for the rest of the film, setting the tone and the director’s intent. With that being said, few films can top Alien’s transforming type and the immersive world that Scott created in this film.
Below are a few of my favorite screen caps, but visit Typeset In The Future for an in-depth analysis of the entire film – the site has previously discussed Moon and 2001: A Space Odyssey!
