One of the standouts from this year’s Comic Con was undoubtedly Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The director talked at length on how this was the film he’s wanted to make his entire life, and it showed. Taken from Jean-Claude Mézières’ seminal comic book (which inspired The Fifth Element), Besson’s adaption is teeming with vibrancy and awe. Cynics will say that this is just an empty CG-fest (which it could be), but the trailer feels as if its steeped with real purpose – there’s a weight to the spectacle that is rare, and an amount of detail on display is overwhelming in the best way. The action also looks mind-blowing and the chemistry between stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevigne seems to be on point.
I’m really pulling for this film – it’s been a while since we’ve gotten a really huge sci-fi adventure, so you can bet that I’ll be first in line, July 2017.
